ASSATEAGUE STATE PARK, Md. - After nearly 10 hours of fishing in the surf, Allen Sklar finally landed a record-breaking whopper. Sklar set a new state record after reeling in a 50-inch striped bass weighing 52 pounds, 14.4 ounces in the Atlantic Division of the Maryland Sportfishing Tournament on Monday.
The previous record was a 52-inch striped bass that weighed 52 pounds, 8 ounces. It also was caught at Assateague. Chris Salp caught that fish in May 2003.
State records are determined by weight.
Sklar caught the fish using a menhaden head for bait. The striped bass was checked in at AKE Marine in Ocean City.
