Man Who His Faked Death is Caught Out
A MAN who faked his own death to get pounds 300,000 in life insurance was caught out after he visited his GP for a check-up.
Ahmad Akhtary, aged 34, got hold of a mockup death certificate from Afghanistan stating he had died of a “brain trauma” in the wake of an accident there.
His British ex-wife, Anne, aged 43, then put in a claim to Norwich Union for the pounds 300,000 due on their shared policy, a court heard.
Akhtary’s deception was uncovered because he continued to live a full and visible life in Gloucester, working in a factory and paying tax.
At Gloucester Crown Court Judge Mark Horton sentenced the pair, both from the city, to nine months imprisonment suspended for two years.
Both were ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work for the community. The charges span August 2005 and November 2006.
