N.H. Officials: Stinky Water Safe to Drink

Posted on: Tuesday, 28 June 2005, 18:00 CDT

CONCORD, N.H. - Algae in Penacook Lake, Concord's drinking water supply, is causing a bit of a stinky situation. Water pumped from the Contoocook River into the lake triggered algae growth to spike last week.

While all drinking water is cleaned and treated before it reaches city taps, the process doesn't remove the foul taste and smell of algae from the water.

Some city residents have been stocking up on store-bought water all week to avoid it.

Plans are in the works for state environment employees to spread algae-killing crystals in the lake later this week.

Meanwhile officials say that although the water stinks, it is safe to drink.
