Police nab alleged art thief

Posted on: Thursday, 22 January 2009, 17:34 CST

Police in New York said a man accused of stealing an $85,000 painting from a gallery was arrested the following day after he allegedly tried to sell the art.

Investigators said Robert Fahey, 41, entered the DJT Fine Art Gallery, where he was known by employees, Saturday and spoke with the manager, the New York Post reported Thursday.

After the manager stepped away, Fahey allegedly took Blue Nude #10, by U.S. painter Thomas Wesselmann, off the wall and fled the gallery with the painting, police said.

The suspect was arrested Sunday after police received an anonymous phone call from someone claiming that Fahey had attempted to sell the painting. Police said they found Fahey near his home carrying the stolen painting in a white canvas bag.

Fahey was charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.
