Cabbie beaten trying to collect fare

Police in New York say four wannabe Good Samaritans mistakenly bloodied a cab driver after they thought they were witnessing a robbery.

The men jumped the driver after they saw him grab a purse from a woman, The New York Post reported Sunday. What they didn't know was that the woman had allegedly stiffed the cabbie for his fare Saturday night, the Post reported.

The woman who allegedly stiffed the driver, and her three friends, hopped the Staten Island Ferry and fled the scene, while the wannabe Samaritans fled the Ferry Terminal in their car, police said.

Police were able to track the women and summons them for non-payment of a fare. The cabbie's attackers remained at large

The cab driver, whose name was not released, was treated for facial cuts at a hospital.
