Cash prize for square root celebrations

A California teacher said he is offering a cash prize for the best celebration of March 3 Square Root Day -- otherwise known as 03/03/09.

Ron Gordon, a teacher in Redwood City, said he is offering a prize of $339 to the revelers who present him with records of the most unique square root-themed celebration by March 27, the San Mateo (Calif.) Daily Journal reported Tuesday.

The teacher's students at Our Common Ground, a treatment program for adolescents and adults with substance abuse and addiction problems, marked square root day by enjoying root beer floats in square cups and tying square knots.

These days are like calendar comets - you wait and wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day and -- poof -- they're gone, Gordon said.
