Pregnant woman allegedly a heroin mule
A pregnant woman was carrying 73 bags of heroin hidden in her waistband when she and a companion were pulled over in Delaware, police allege.
Police said Shawnett Backus, 31, was arrested Wednesday after a routine traffic stop near Wilmington led to the alleged discovery of six bags of heroin between the seats of the vehicle in which she was a passenger, The (Wilmington, Del.) News Journal reported Thursday.
A police officer searched the vehicle after the vehicle's driver, Jeron Johnson, 27, failed to provide an insurance card. The search also uncovered a stun gun and a loaded .22-caliber handgun, police allege.
New Castle County police spokesman Cpl. Trinidad Navarro said the two Wilmington residents were then taken into custody and searched at police headquarters.
Navarro alleged that search uncovered an additional 73 bags of heroin that Johnson, who is four months pregnant, had hidden in her waistband. How much cocaine was in the bags was not disclosed.
The News Journal said the pair face charges ranging from possession with intent to deliver heroin to tampering with evidence.
