Calif. aquarium welcomes 11-pound lobster

Posted on: Thursday, 26 March 2009, 14:29 CDT

A free-diver who found an 11-pound lobster says his eye-popping catch now calls an aquarium in Monterey, Calif., home.

Free-diver Tom Powers downplayed his discovery of the large crustacean off the coast of California's Santa Rosa Island prior to the animal's relocation to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Ventura County (Calif.) Star said Thursday.

I won the bug lotto by looking under the right ledge, Powers said of his impressive catch two weeks ago.

Scott Reid, the aquarium's associate curator for fish and invertebrates, said Powers' lobster could be up to 90 years old given its impressive size.

I've seen big lobsters before but nothing like this, Reid told the Star.

Powers doesn't appear to regret his decision to hand the large lobster over to the aquarium instead of having the animal adorn his dinner plate.

Ultimately it was way more gratifying than one dinner, Powers said to the newspaper.
