Whale leaves San Diego Bay after 26 days

April 7, 2009

A Pacific gray whale that spent 26 days delighting onlookers in San Diego Bay has apparently left the city to return to the ocean, officials said.

An official at the San Diego Maritime Museum said Monday marked the second day without a sighting of the whale, named Diego, and the water mammal was last spotted close to the open ocean Saturday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday.

We’re hoping (Diego) went back home where he belongs, said Robyn Gallant, the museum’s director of public events.

The whale was dubbed Diego by the public after it was first spotted in the bay March 10.

We wish him well… and hope he will come back next year, said Valaree Gilmore, a manager at Anthony’s Fish Grotto, where many of the whale’s admirers gathered to watch it swim.
