Maryland lawmakers decided this year not to alter the official state song, but some legislators said they are hoping to change portions in the future.
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, D-Calvert County, who previously supporting keeping Maryland, My Maryland
exactly as it was written during the Civil War era by James Ryder Randall, said he now supports at least partially rewriting the song to delete offensive passages, such as a reference to Northern scum,
The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday.
It was a great war song. The words were just stunning, but of course offensive to a great many people,
Miller said. However, he said he now believes the song certainly needs to be modified.
Miller suggested the first half of the song could remain unchanged provided the more controversial passages in the last couple of verses are rewritten.
