New SUV designed with pets in mind

A Honda official says the new Element sport utility vehicle from the Japanese automobile group was created with pet safety in mind.

Honda senior product planner James Jenkins said the Element, which was unveiled Wednesday at the International Auto Show in New York, features a retractable ramp for and mesh safety restraints for furry passengers, the New York Post said Thursday.

What we wanted was to enhance on pet safety, Jenkins said after the vehicle debuted at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

Pets are part of the family, he added. Even in a recession, people are still spending money on their pets, and you can't put a price on their safety.

Humane Society official Heather Commisa praised Honda for its focus on pet owners.

It's really cool to see a car designed with a dog in mind, Commisa told the Post.

More families have pets these days and they are part of our lifestyle.
