Virgin Mary image a hit for Calif. eatery

A reverend in Calexico, Calif., agrees a kitchen griddle at a local restaurant features a likeness of the Virgin Mary, the site's manager says.

Brenda Martinez, general manager of the Las Palmas Restaurant, said the Rev. Gerardo Fernandez of Calexico's Our Lady of Guadalupe Church confirmed the image on the piece of cooking equipment does resemble the mother of Jesus Christ, the Imperial Valley Press reported Thursday.

Martinez said a female cook at the eatery noticed the image while cleaning the griddle last Wednesday.

It was shocking. We didn't know what to think, she said of the discovery.

The restaurant immediately stopped using the griddle and placed it in a storage room, where large crowds have come to take a look.

Martinez told the Valley Press more than 100 people have already visited the eatery to witness the religious spectacle.
