Baby born in hospital parking lot
A New York state mother said her baby was born in the car while her husband drove through the hospital parking lot toward the emergency room.
Julie and Michael Schmidt said their first daughter, Sydney, was born after 36 hours of labor two years ago, so they assumed they would have plenty of time to drive from their East Amherst, N.Y., home to Sisters Hospital — 16 miles away — when Julie went into labor with their second child at 3 a.m. last Thursday, the Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported Wednesday.
However, the couple said they did not drive far before determining that their chosen hospital was too far for the speed the baby was coming so they altered their route toward the closer Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst, N.Y.
The couple said baby Leighton Schmidt was born just as their 2004 Lexus pulled into the hospital parking lot.
It’s the first time I ever had a patient deliver herself in the car, or deliver herself, period, said Dr. Margaret Novotny, Julie’s OB/GYN practitioner.
Her maternal instinct was right there. She was completely about the baby.
Doctors said mother and child are both in excellent health.
It was such a wonderful, glorious blessing that came out of an hour of sheer horror, Julie Schmidt said.
