Moose ‘fell from the sky,’ died on impact

Authorities in Maine said a yearling bull moose that wandered onto an interstate fell from an overpass and died as a result of landing on its head.

Shirley Bailey, assistant town clerk for Clinton, Maine, said she received a call from a motorist just after 8 a.m. Tuesday who saw the moose land and die, the Kennebec Journal of Augusta, Maine, reported Thursday.

I was driving under the bridge on Hinckley Road and a moose fell from the sky, the motorist told Bailey.

Police Chief Charles Runnels said the moose was apparently startled while on the Interstate 95 overpass and plummeted the 18 feet to the road below.

He landed on his head, and died right off, Runnels said.

Runnels said a man driving a wrecker stopped and asked if he could take the animal's corpse. He said traffic on Hinckley Road reopened shortly after the man loaded up the carcass and drove away.
