Airport probes parking lot substance

North Carolina's Raleigh-Durham International Airport said it has hired a consultant to stop a corrosive substance from striking cars in the parking garage.
Airport officials said an engineering consultant has been hired to discover the source of the substance, which has sporadically been discovered on cars during wet weather since the parking deck was completed in 2003, the Raleigh News & Observer reported Tuesday.
The airport said it has paid out more than $24,000 to repair vehicles damaged by the substance between December 2003 and May 7 of this year.
It doesn't happen very often, and it's not readily predictable,
deputy airport director Steven Pittman said. Three or four days a year we have this problem, at most. And it doesn't last very long.
Pittman said the consultant's report hopefully will explain what the substance is and where it comes from, and what, if anything, is available for a remedy.
