A Pennsylvania woman said her runaway 52-pound tortoise is back at home after a passerby found the animal and took it to a reptile rescue center.
Simmer Dougherty, 48, said the African sulcata tortoise, Nala, wandered out of her Chester County yard May 20 after a gate was left slightly ajar. She had no word of her pet until she learned Tuesday that Nala had been found and taken to a reptile rescue called Forgotten Friend in Manheim, Pa., the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.
Dougherty said Kevin Kopanski contacted her Tuesday and said he had found the large tortoise about four houses away from her home May 20 and taken it to the Great Valley Nature Center, which then transported the animal to Forgotten Friend. He told Dougherty he had read a story about the missing tortoise online and believed it was the same one he had found.
Dougherty said she is happy to have Nala home and plans to install a new lock on her gate to ensure the tortoise stays at home in the future.
