Authorities in Moscow said they arrested a man who allegedly posed as an Interpol agent to swindle a woman out of more than $35,000.

An unidentified man, who posed as the police major-general of the Russian National Central Bureau of Interpol, offered to the woman his assistance in purchasing non-residential quarters in Moscow. The defrauded woman gave 1.1 million roubles ($35,605) to him, but as the disguised ‘major- general’ did not give to her the promised assistance she turned to police, a Moscow law enforcement source told news agency Itar-Tass.

On Thursday the suspect was detained. He is an unemployed Muscovite, the source said.

The source said a portion of the woman’s money was confiscated from the suspect.
