Shark abandoned in city street

Police in Miami said someone dumped a 6-foot-long nurse shark, a protected species, in the middle of a road.

Authorities said they first received a call about the shark in the city's Overtown neighborhood at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, but witnesses said it had been in the middle of the road since at least 7 p.m., The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

Renato Martinez, 53, who works at fish wholesaler and restaurant Garcia's, told police two men on bicycles had come by the business earlier in the evening and offered to sell the shark. Staff members refused, and the two men must have abandoned the shark in the road, Martinez said.

Authorities said the men could face misdemeanor charges for improper killing and disposal of an animal and a charge in connection with selling shark without a license.
