Barneys pulls bloody mannequin display

New York clothing store Barneys has removed a controversial display that appeared to depict blood-splattered mannequins fending off invisible attackers.

The window display, which was located in a vestibule along E. 61st St., was ordered taken down Tuesday by Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys, Doonan told the New York Daily News.

We encourage our display people to be creative. We give them a lot of latitude, but this clearly crossed the line, he said. It's as if someone saw a bad Hitchcock movie.

The Daily News said passersby had criticized the window display as distasteful and a little crazy. Only one witness quoted by the News, a 16-year-old student, called the display artistic.
