Claymore mine found in Goodwill donations

July 22, 2009

Police say a Colorado strip mall was evacuated after a Claymore mine was discovered among the donations at a Goodwill store.

Arvada police Sgt. Jeff Monzingo said a Goodwill employee familiar with military equipment recognized the device as an explosive Tuesday and notified police that some type of mine had been donated to the store, KMGH-TV, Denver, reported Wednesday.

The Jefferson County Bomb squad identified the device as a Claymore mine and disposed of it. The bomb squad said the mine is designed to scatter steel balls as shrapnel for more than 100 yards.

Monzingo said authorities were unsure whether the mine was functional. He said investigators were trying to determine who dropped off the mine.
