Police bust canary-fighting ring

Police in Connecticut said a raid on a Shelton house allegedly involved in a bird-fighting ring discovered nearly 150 canaries and saffron finches.

Investigators said the birds, known more for their songs than fighting skills, were seized from a home Sunday morning in a joint operation involving Shelton police, state police, the Department of Agriculture and officers from the Connecticut cities of Bridgeport, Ansonia and Fairfield, WTIC-TV, Hartford, reported Monday.

They have a cage in the middle that's set up like a ring, where the two will go into one cage and fight, Shelton police Sgt. Robert Kozlowsky said. It's looking like animal cruelty and illegal gambling. They (officers) have found a large amount of currency also at this scene.

Police said 19 arrests were made and $8,000 cash seized.
