Memphis Liberty Bell returns to city
The Memphis Liberty Bell, formerly in the city’s defunct Libertyland amusement park, has been returned to the city following disagreements about ownership.
The 3,000-pound bell, which was moved to Tunica, Miss., after the annual Mid-South Fair, had been displayed at Libertyland until the park closed. The bell was moved from Memphis in anticipation of a new permanent location in Tunica, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported.
Jim Rout, general manager of the Mid-South Fair, said an agreement was made with the Memphis Park Service to have the bell displayed at a location to be determined by the service.
Wherever it ends up, it should be available for all Memphians to view, Shelby County Commissioner Steve Mulroy said.
