Bartending school sees record registration

An Ohio bartending school says it is seeing record enrollment numbers as an increasing number of people seek work in a recession-proof industry.
Troy Poland, education director for the Professional Bartending Institute of Columbus, said enrollment grew from about 250 students in 2007 to about 500 in 2008 and enrollments for this year's classes are expected to top 700, the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Friday.
Terry Meinhardt, director of the school, said bartending is becoming more popular because it is a recession-proof industry.
Ohio restaurants said they have seen a surge in applications from newly licensed bartenders.
We've been getting a crazy amount of applications,
said Amy Brennick, chief operations officer for Betty's Family of Restaurants. I'd say about three times the amount we normally have in the past.
