Cash tossed from car, traffic jam ensues

A man said to be emotionally disturbed tossed cash from his car in Los Angeles and police said a traffic jam resulted when drivers stopped to get their cut.

The 56-year-old man, whose name was not reported, threw an undetermined amount of money from his car as he drove along the 210 Freeway Sunday afternoon. California Highway Patrol Officer Anthony Martin said about 10 people had gotten out of their cars to pick up the money, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The generous driver showed up a short while alter at the Azusa (Calif.) Police Department headquarters and told police he wanted to take his own life, Azusa Police Lt. Steve Hunt said. He said Los Angeles County fire personnel took the man to a hospital for evaluation.

Police asked the people who picked up money from the freeway to turn it in to Azusa police or the CHP, the Times said.
