Man’s cell phone turns on stove

A New York man said he discovered an unusual and unwelcome feature of his cell phone -- it turns on his stove.

Andrei Melnikov said his Maytag Magic Chef stove beeps and turn its broiler onto the highest setting if his phone, which he has had for about three years, receives an incoming call while within two feet of the appliance, WABC-TV, New York, reported Tuesday.

Melnikov said a piece of plastic cookware caught on fire the first time his phone triggered the stove and subsequent tests confirmed that his phone was to blame for turning on the broiler.

He said the stove is currently unplugged and Maytag has agreed to send a repair crew to get to the bottom of the problem.
