1,000 ukuleles play ‘Ode to Joy’

About 1,000 ukulele players gathered in London to simultaneously play Ode to Joy from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

The eight members of the ukulele ensemble that organized the event said they had expected about 200 people to turn up with ukuleles at Albert Hall Tuesday.

Instead, the venue was so packed with players that an accurate count of participants couldn't be made, The Times of London reported Thursday.

George Hinchliffe, the orchestra's musical director, said an estimated 1,000 people joined in with the ukulele band.

That was, of course, the setting of a fragment of Beethoven to 1,008 ukuleles, he said.
