Python found lurking in shopping bag

A British woman with a thing about snakes got a nasty surprise when she looked in the bottom of her shopping bag and saw a 3-foot python.

Lesley Coles of Chard in Somerset decided to check the bag, which she had just removed from a cupboard, when her dog started barking at it, the Chard and Ilminster News reported.

I'm terrified of snakes and I couldn't believe it when I saw it, she said. I was shaking for ages afterwards.

Coles threw the bag, the snake still inside, into her yard and called her daughter, Sarah Cross. Officers from the Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals arrived and retrieved the snake.

My mum was hysterical -- she really doesn't like snakes at all, Cross said.

An RSPCA officer told Coles she was lucky the python was a young one since they can grow to be 15 feet long. He was unsure how the snake got into her house but said it might have been living in the cupboard for several months.

The python has been placed with a snake fancier.
