Police in Florida said a missing tortoise worth $8,500 was found safe and sound in a neighbor's yard a few houses from her owner's home.
Crestview Police Lt. Jamie Grant Tuesday said Scooter, a 12-year-old spur-thighed tortoise, was found a few houses away from home nearly a week after she disappeared from owner Susan Dean's backyard last Wednesday, the Northwest Florida Daily News reported.
Police said they initially suspected the 120-pound tortoise had been stolen due to its value, but investigators said they now believe Scooter escaped on her own and made her way to the neighbor's yard.
Dean said her pet, which requires a Florida Fish and Wildlife permit to keep, is now safely back at home.
