Police in California said they arrested a man who became stuck in a church air-conditioning system while attempting to evade officers.
Fremont Police Detective Bill Veteran said Erik Stebile, 29, of Fremont, Calif., was being sought by officers on a $50,000 drug warrant and led officers on a quarter-mile car chase Wednesday afternoon before abandoning his car and running into the First Christian Church of Fremont, the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune reported Thursday.
Veteran said church employees vacated the building when the suspect ran in and officers surrounded the church. He said officers entered the building and discovered Stebile had become wedged in an air duct. The suspect was handcuffed and officers removed him from the duct with the help of the Fremont Fire Department.
Stebile was arrested on the drug warrant and an additional charge of evading arrest.
A female passenger Stebile left behind in his car was detained but not arrested, Veteran said.
