Boy, 8, ditched school in van
Officials with a Texas school district said an 8-year-old boy who was excused for a bathroom break drove away from school in an employee’s van.
Tammy Castleberry, a spokeswoman for the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District, said the Eagle Mountain Elementary School student allegedly left class for a bathroom break Tuesday and discovered the van’s keys inside the vehicle, The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday.
Castleberry said the school was locked down when officials couldn’t find the third-grader. The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department was informed of the missing child.
The spokeswoman said a good Samaritan noticed the boy driving about 5 miles from the school and followed him into a gas station parking lot, where they were greeted by sheriff’s deputies. Castleberry said there were no injuries or property damage resulting from the incident.
It’s the best-case scenario for a unique situation, she said.
She said school officials have not yet decided on disciplinary action for the boy.
