Family finds black widow in grapes

September 22, 2009

A suburban Detroit family said they were shocked and worried to discover a black widow spider in a bundle of red grapes they bought from a grocery store.

Albertos and Kimberly Pryor of Pontiac who have three young sons, said they purchased the grapes Sunday from a Meijer store in Auburn Hills and discovered the venomous spider in the produce once they returned home, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported Tuesday.

I wanted to get it in something so it didn’t get loose in the house, Albertos Pryor said. I ran back over and got a glass jar and just took some foil and kind of brushed him into the jar.

Kimberly Pryor said the store manager at Meijer brushed aside her concerns.

The manager told me to throw the spider in the toilet, flush it down, just eat my grapes and forget about it, she said.

I know stuff happens, you know. You can’t always catch everything, Kimberly Pryor said. But they could at least apologize for it.

Meijer released a statement about the incident.

We go to great lengths to ensure the produce in our stores is fresh and safe. This includes working with our produce suppliers to ensure they observe the highest levels of food safety protocols and multiple levels of inspection, the statement read.
