A weekly Denver newspaper said it has received dozens of applications for its latest job opening — medical marijuana dispensary critic.

Patricia Calhoun, editor of the alternative weekly paper Westword, said she is searching for someone with a doctor-issued medical marijuana card for a legitimate condition to tour the dozens of dispensaries that have appeared in Denver during the last year, The New York Times reported Monday.

We want to see what kind of place it is, how well they care for you and also how sketchy the place is, Calhoun said. Do they actually look at your medical marijuana card? Do they let you slip some cash under the counter and bypass the rules?

It is the wild west of medical marijuana out here, she said. There were a couple of dozen dispensaries this spring, and now it’s over 100. We just heard there’s going to be a drive-through dispensary.

Calhoun said applications for the position must include a resume and an essay titled What Marijuana Means to Me.

Every time an application comes in, it’s like opening a little birthday present, because most of them are quite hilarious, she said.
