A case of a stolen peanut butter sandwich at the Des Moines airport has been turned over to federal authorities.
That’s because only 16 federal security workers had access to the room where the sandwich was taken.
Christine Woods of Des Moines reported that her sandwich was taken from a break room. Entry to the room is controlled by punching a code into a keypad, police said.
Police took a report, but suspended the investigation and turned it over to the Transportation Security Administration.
“By the letter of the law, it is a theft,” Lt. David Huberty said. “But sending a detective out to the airport to interview 16 people over a missing sandwich would be, I think, inappropriate use of resources.”
Woods said she was concerned a wallet or purse could be stolen in the future, according to the police report.
