RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Lawyer Dawn M. Dunbar is in a heap of trouble.
Riverside County sheriff's deputies arrested the 30-year-old attorney who allegedly passed marijuana to her client during a court hearing.
Dunbar, who works for a Los Angeles County law firm, was booked Friday for attempt to bring a controlled substance into a jail facility and investigation of conspiracy to commit a felony.
She was released after posting a $25,000 bond later Friday. A court hearing was set for April 4.
Dunbar was arrested after a deputy searched her 23-year-old client and found a small packet of marijuana in the pocket of his jail-issued jumpsuit, said sheriff's Sgt. Shelley Kennedy-Smith.
The deputy saw Dunbar hand the packet to her client, Christopher James Salazar. The deputy then searched Salazar as he was leaving the courtroom and found the pot, Kennedy-Smith said.
She said deputies often search defendants after their attorney passes them something in court to make sure the defendants are not smuggling items into jail.
Dunbar has been relieved as Salazar's attorney. Salazar faces domestic violence and assault charges. He was not charged in connection with the marijuana case.
Rick Loftus, with Dunbar's law firm, Loftus & Associates of Westlake Village, declined comment. A jail official did not know if Dunbar had a defense attorney.
