Paper: Thief on Trial for Courtroom Theft

HONG KONG - Maybe the thief should have quit while he was ahead.

A man with four theft convictions found himself on trial again and was acquitted but got right back into trouble by grabbing a woman's handbag as he left the courtroom, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Chan Kwok-keung, 34, ended up with a four-month jail sentence after pleading guilty on Monday to stealing the bag — and items inside including keys and herbal tea worth $25, Hong Kong Judiciary spokeswoman Jaime Or told The Associated Press.

After Chan's court appearance in January, the woman, a court interpreter, soon saw that her bag was missing and alerted officials who say they found Chan holding it outside, according to an account in the Chinese-language Ming Pao daily.

A defense lawyer said Chan thought the interpreter's handbag was his mother's, but the judge didn't buy the explanation, Ming Pao said.

Or told AP she could not confirm all the details of the alleged crime or the arguments made in court by Chan's lawyer.
