Police Find Man in Trunk After Car Crash

January 21, 2004

Police were searching late Monday for an Oklahoma man who fled with a rifle and scope from the scene of a car crash where a badly-beaten Arkansas man was found in the trunk

“The guy we’re looking for is armed and dangerous,” said undersheriff Tim McCollum of the Adair County sheriff’s office.

Police said they want to interview Matthew “Mouse” Crittenden, 32, of Adair County. Crittenden was last seen fleeing the car wreck on foot, clutching the rifle.

A Westville police officer attempted to pull over the car Crittenden was riding in when it sped up and three miles later crashed into trees. The trunk popped open and Mike Summers of Summers, Ark., was found inside.

“The traffic stop probably saved his life,” McCollum said of Summers.

Summers and Corey Jones, 35, of Westville were beaten at a Baron, Okla., residence, McCollum said.

Summers was in good condition at Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital on Monday, a hospital spokesman said. Jones was in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Another suspect, Richard “Rocky” Benoit, also fled the car, but soon hobbled out of nearby woods, police said. He was in the Adair County jail late Monday on unrelated warrants.
