Students at Tobin Elementary School in Cambridge got to see something that doesn’t happen every day – their principal kissing a pig.
Principal Donald Watson of Tobin Elementary School was honoring a bet that was won by the school’s 410 students after they read – or had read to them – more than 2,003 books in a year. The event Monday coincided with the National Education Association’s Read-Across-America Day.
Receiving the kiss was Daisy, an eight-year-old pot-bellied pig brought to the stage in the school auditorium in a modified baby carriage.
Daisy and owner, Paul Minor of Bristol, Conn., travel throughout the country to promote reading among school children. Their stops included Washington, D.C., and resulted in a thank-you letter from first lady Laura Bush, Minor said.
Tobin includes kindergarten through eighth grade.
