More than 15 percent of drivers of police cars and public transportation vehicles in India’s capital have failed driving tests, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Color blindness and other vision problems were found among the 1,500 public transportation drivers who failed the tests, said The Times of India newspaper.

The test was taken by 9,400 bus drivers, 5,800 three-wheeler taxis and 242 drivers of police patrol cars by the Institute of Driver Training and Research.

Those who failed the tests included 15 percent of police drivers and 16 percent of taxi drivers, it said. Many police drivers were found incapable of handling emergency situations or high-speed chases, the institute said.

Accidents by careless, drunk or incompetent drivers are common on New Delhi’s roads.
