CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A worker servicing a bank ATM was bound with duct tape and locked inside a closet-like space attached to the machine by a robber, police said.
The woman was working on the automated teller machine in a tiny outbuilding near a LaSalle Bank branch in suburban Detroit at 7 a.m. Thursday when a man walked up and showed a handgun, police Sgt. Rick Pomorski said.
The man shoved the woman inside the space behind the machine and closed the door, then used duct tape to tie her hands and feet and cover her mouth, Pomorski said. He took money from the ATM as well as the woman's company car.
About 90 minutes later, customers discovered that the machine didn't work. One of them heard the woman's muffled voice from inside, Pomorski said.
Police were called, and firefighters had to cut the door open to free the woman, who was not injured, he said.
