Taiwan's Sewer Covers Pop Up in China

Thousands of cast iron manhole sewer covers have mysteriously disappeared from Taiwan's streets in the past year, and a Taiwanese newspaper reported on Monday that their final destination appears to have been China.
A Taiwanese tourist recently spotted some of the covers in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, said the United Daily News, one of the island's biggest newspapers. The traveler provided the newspaper with pictures of the covers on Wuhan streets that had marks from city governments in Taiwan, the paper said.
One picture printed in the newspaper showed a cover bearing the mark of "Official property of Neihu," a district in the capital, Taipei.
Taiwanese businesses cannot ship goods directly to China because of a wide range of restrictions on contact with the communist giant, which claims that self-ruled Taiwan is part of the mainland.
However, smugglers from both sides of the Taiwan Strait do a booming trade in everything from guns and drugs to pedigree dogs and stolen cars.
