Fans Get Paid to See Baseball Game

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Forget baseball caps, seat cushions and bobblehead dolls.
To promote Tuesday's Midwest League game against the Fort Wayne Wizards, the Battle Creek Yankees decided not only to offer some free tickets, but also to give away a little cash to every fan in attendance.
Battle Creek, a Single-A team affiliated with the New York Yankees, planned to give a dollar bill to each customer - regardless of whether the fan got in by using a free general admission ticket, by presenting a season ticket or by buying a box seat at regular price.
"There's no catch. Come to the game and get a dollar," said Scott Sailor, director of special projects for the Battle Creek Yankees. "You can't get a better deal in minor-league baseball."
General admission tickets at C.O. Brown Stadium usually cost $6 each for adults and $4 apiece for children age 14 and under as well as seniors age 55 and over.
"Everyone gives away T-shirts. But this one, one size fits all. Who can't use a dollar?" Sailor told the Battle Creek Enquirer.
"I have been wanting to do this for a couple of years. I just said, `We are doing it.' The owners are interested in seeing how it works."
Sailor hopes the money will be used toward the purchase of hot dogs and soft drinks, "but, of course, you can keep it and get paid for coming to the ball game."
The Battle Creek Yankees' season started Thursday with the first of seven straight home games. They dropped their first three to the Lansing Lugnuts while averaging slightly more than 1,100 fans per game.
On Monday night, in front of 515 customers, Battle Creek won for the first time by beating Fort Wayne 8-6.
Sailor hoped his idea will pay off.
"If it works, we might do it again," he said. "If it doesn't, I might get fired and you will be talking to someone else next week."
