Snow Wipes Out Mariners-Indians Series

CLEVELAND – Cold and wet weather wiped out the Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians for the fourth straight day, causing the teams to postpone Monday’s scheduled doubleheader.

The forecast called for sleeting rain, snow flurries and a projected high of 34 degrees. While snow stopped falling Monday, the grounds crew was unable to get the field in shape for the games after three days of snow.

A storm left more than a foot of snow in some places in the Cleveland area, and the entire three-game series will have to be played at later dates. It was the first time an entire three-game series was postponed by weather since Hurricane Frances put off the Chicago Cubs’ at Florida Marlins set from Sept. 3-5, 2004, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Major League Baseball was considering moving the Los Angeles Angels’ series at Cleveland, slated to start Tuesday, to Anaheim. The forecast in Cleveland calls for more cool weather, but no snow. Rain is possible Wednesday.

Cleveland still has not played an official home opener. Friday’s game was postponed after four innings.

Seattle plays Tuesday at Boston.

After Friday’s game was called, the teams hoped to play a day-night doubleheader Saturday, but that was put off by the spring storm. They then scheduled a doubleheader for Sunday, which also was postponed. With time on their hands, Seattle players at Jacobs Field made snow angels.
