British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met with U.S. President George Bush in Washington -- as well as three people wanting to be the next White House occupant.
Brown conducted back-to-back meetings at the British ambassador's residence with the Democratic contenders, Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois, and the presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona, The New York Times reported Friday.
What I was convinced of, after talking to each of them and talking about the issues that concern them and concern the world, is that the relationship between America and Britain will remain strong, remain steadfast. Brown said during a joint appearance with Bush Thursday in the White House Rose Garden.
Representives of the three presidential candidates offered little description of the sessions with Brown, each lasting about 45 minutes.
White House spokesman Tony Fratto called the meetings a wise move.
Bush said the United States and Britain enjoy a special relationship.
I'm confident future presidents will keep it that way, he said.
