Cindy McCain, wife of presumptive U.S. GOP presidential candidate John McCain, was in Vietnam Thursday with Operation Smile to help disfigured children.
McCain was assisting with the screening of children with cleft palates and similar disfigurements who are seeking surgery, ABC News reported. She said she got involved with the charity because of her adopted daughter, originally from Bangladesh, who needed a similar operation.
She said that her husband, who was a prisoner of war in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, would end the Iraq War so that the troops can come home with dignity.
McCain criticized Michelle Obama for saying she was proud of her country for the first time.
Everyone has their own experience, she said. I don't know why she said what she said. All I know is that I have always been proud of my country.
But in another interview, with CNN, McCain said that the candidates' families, including their spouses, should be given privacy.
There has to be some decorum left in politics and in American journalism as well. Our husbands are the candidates, she said.
