Federal prosecutors say a Colorado jail inmate has been charged with mailing a threatening letter to likely Republican U.S. presidential nominee John McCain.
Marc Harold Ramsey, 39, incarcerated at the Arapahoe County Jail since 2007 for felony menacing, 2nd degree assault, contempt of court and being a fugitive from justice, will be transferred from state to federal custody, CNN reported Saturday.
Federal authorities said campaign workers at the Denver office of the U.S. senator from Arizona opened an envelope Thursday to discover a threatening letter and a white, powdery substance. The substance turned out not to be harmful, they said.
An FBI affidavit filed with the case said the letter read, "Senator McCain, If you are reading this then you are already DEAD! Unless of course you can't or don't breathe."
"A death threat is not a legitimate form of political expression," U.S. Attorney Troy Eid told CNN. "We won't stand for threats of this kind in Colorado."
Eid said that If convicted, Ramsey draw up to five years in federal prison and face a fine of up to $250,000.
