Iran Wants Further Nuclear Energy Cooperation With Russia

Posted on: Friday, 1 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

MOSCOW. June 30 (Interfax) - Iran's president-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he hopes Iranian-Russian cooperation in nuclear energy will continue.

"Cooperation between our two friendly nations is developing for the sake of establishing and strengthening peace and stability in the region and the world as a whole, and for the sake of our mutual interests. We hope Russia's participation in the implementation of the nuclear energy project will be continued with due account taken of these targets," Ahmadinejad said in a message to President Vladimir Putin, which was circulated by the Iranian Embassy in Moscow on Thursday.

Ahmadinejad also said "the new Iranian leadership attaches great importance to the problem of the legal status of the Caspian Sea, fair utilization of Caspian resources by neighboring countries, cooperation in protecting the natural environment, and in fighting state and non-state terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime."

"We are prepared to broaden cooperation in these areas," he said.

"Unfortunately, tendencies towards pursuing unilateral policies and attempting to establish uncontrollable rule have seriously spoiled international relations. In many instances, violations of international law have evolved into a threat to peace and international security," Ahmadinejad said.

"This factor insistently requires stronger coordination of actions and solidarity of the peoples and governments of independent and free states," he said.
