Bush Pushes Roberts' Court Nomination

President Bush used his weekly radio address Saturday to promote his nomination of U.S. District Judge John Roberts to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Bush said Roberts, a 50-year-old member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, has a stellar record of achievement. He is a man of sound judgment and the highest integrity.
Roberts, who was nominated Tuesday replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, has been spending time on Capitol Hill meeting with senators who will vote on his confirmation. Bush said he had been in touch with Senate leaders and said these senators share my goal of an orderly and dignified confirmation process and it is important that Judge Roberts be confirmed before the court reconvenes on Oct. 3.
Bush repeated themes he has expressed frequently since announcing the nomination -- that Roberts has the qualities Americans expect in a judge -- experience, wisdom, fairness and civility. He has profound respect for the rule of law and for the liberties guaranteed to every citizen. He will strictly apply the Constitution and laws, not legislate from the bench.
