Energy-generating solar panels and other design innovations featured at Stadia Expo 2011

A growing number of stadium roofing projects are using a lightweight Makrolon polycarbonate sheet material for its unique ability to combine greater aesthetic design freedom with the functionality of daylighting, energy efficiency and structural integrity. Three such installations will be showcased in detailed mock-ups at the Bayer MaterialScience booth at Stadia Expo 2011 in Los Angeles California.

A growing number of stadium roofing projects are using a lightweight Makrolon polycarbonate sheet material for its unique ability to combine greater aesthetic design freedom with the functionality of daylighting, energy efficiency and structural integrity. Three such installations will be showcased in detailed mock-ups at the Bayer MaterialScience booth at Stadia Expo 2011 in Los Angeles California.

The material, Makrolon® multi UV polycarbonate sheet, offers an exceptionally high strength to weight ratio, coupled with a level of light transmission appropriate for translucent roofing. Its multi-wall configuration of thin structural channels inside its solid outer “skin” provides structural strength needed for large overhead spans. Also, its lightweight and the ability to cold curve it in place contribute to low installation costs.

Detailed mock-ups of installations at the company’s booth include one that incorporates photovoltaic modules to supplement a stadium’s power supply. German Bundesliga soccer club SV Werder in Bremen is installing 3,000 square meters of the composite panels developed jointly by Sunovation GmbH and Bayer MaterialScience. They consist of silicon cells embedded between clear Makrolon® sheet and a sheet of triple-walled Makrolon multi UV. The construction provides structurally sound break-resistant panels for the overhead installation.

Bayer MaterialScience will also feature mock-ups of the soccer stadium in Lille, France, and the BayArena soccer venue in Leverkeusen, Germany. Both stadiums demonstrate the design versatility and functionality possible with its multi UV sheet products.

Dramatic Colors, Designs Enhance 2012 European Soccer Championship Sites

Design advantages of Makrolon multi UV sheet for stadium roofing received major attention at the 2008 Olympics in China, where the material was used in the Shenyang Stadium. More recent installations include several 2012 UEFA tournament venues.

The color versatility of Makrolon multi UV allows designers of Poland’s PGE Arena Gdansk to generate a dramatic amber glow from the stadium, highlighting the area’s connection with amber as the “gold of the Baltic Sea.” To achieve the desired effect, six shades of material were used for the stadium’s roofing and in its outer shell.

Another UEFA venue in Poland, the Legia Warsawa arena, utilizes over 5500 square meters of Makrolon multi UV in the roofing structure. 12-meter long sheets were produced in a special 1.2-meter width for increased load-bearing capacity to withstand the strong winds and heavy snow common in the area.

Romania’s Lia Manoliu national stadium under construction in Bucharest incorporates clear monolithic 8mm Makrolon UV sheet. The 5500 square meters of transparent overhead panels are fabricated and installed on site using standard tools. This host site for the 2012 Euro League final uses spans of 12-meter long sheets, for cost-effective installation.

According to Tim Louven, North American Product Manager for Makrolon multi UV, “Our multiwall polycarbonate products satisfy the esthetic, functional and energy-saving demands of today’s construction projects.”
