U.S. Conference of Mayors President Beverly O'Neill Heads to La., Gulfcoast Region to Assess Needs of Cities Hit By Hurricane Katrina

The United States Conference of Mayors President and Long Beach, Calif., Mayor Beverly O'Neill will head to Baton Rouge today, Thursday, Sept. 15, to meet with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and other city officials to assess the needs for New Orleans as they prepare to rebuild.
On Friday, Sept. 16, Mayor O'Neill, along with Mobile, Ala., Mayor Michael Dow, will travel to Gulfport, Miss., where they will meet with other mayors in the Gulfcoast Region to assess the individual needs of those cities hardest hit by the hurricane.
Additionally, on Friday, the U.S. Conference of Mayors will announce that Mobile, Ala., will be their main distribution site for supplies and needed resources for the impacted cities.
"In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we continue to see the true devastation and destruction this horrible storm has brought to these cities. We are traveling to Baton Rouge to stand with the mayor of New Orleans, and then to Gulfport to stand with the mayors in Alabama and Mississippi, to underscore that the nation's mayors are in full support of these cities as they begin to regroup and rebuild," O'Neill said.
"Mayors across this country are already sending supplies to these areas, we are providing housing for displaced citizens, and we will continue to provide cash donations for these affected areas. The U.S. Conference of Mayors is prepared for the long haul to help these mayors and their citizens get back on their feet," O'Neill added.
