Alliance for Justice Releases Post-Hearing Report on the Nomination of Judge John G. Roberts; Evasion the Hallmark of Roberts' Testimony

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 September 2005, 15:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Alliance for Justice today released a post-hearing report on the nomination of Judge John G. Roberts to be Chief Justice of the United States. The report examines Judge Roberts' refusal to answer critical questions regarding his legal views; his unwillingness to disavow the troubling positions he took in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, especially on civil rights and women's rights; and the testimony he did provide on federal legislative power, judicial authority to enforce individual rights, and presidential power.

"Chief Justice nominee John Roberts testified for two-and-a- half days before the Senate Judiciary Committee, yet the Senate does not know much more about his legal views now than it did when the hearings started," noted Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron. "He has thus done little to allay the concerns that many had going into the hearings," Aron continued.

"With the White House continuing to stonewall on releasing documents from Judge Roberts' tenure in the solicitor general's office, and with Judge Roberts offering nothing to counter what's in the existing record, there is only one conclusion to be drawn: Judge Roberts has not met the heavy burden of proving that he warrants a lifetime appointment to the most influential judgeship in the country," concluded Aron.
